Learning Areas

The College offers a curriculum that is both high in diversity and broad in its depth of study, with the support and guidance of highly qualified, professional teaching staff.

Academic diversity is evident in the variety of subjects and courses on offer at each stage of schooling.

Years 7 and 8

Each student in Years 7 and 8 undertakes study in Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Technology, Visual Art, Music, PDHPE, Literacy and Technological Studies (in Year 7) and French or Indonesian (in Year 8).

Xavier Catholic College has a student netbook program from Year 7 so that all students have access to a netbook to enhance their learning.

The netbook program is complemented by the Literacy and Technology Studies that in Year 7 is undertaken by every student.

Literacy and Technology Studies (LATS)

LATS is a course designed to instruct students in the College’s computer network, the Microsoft Office Suite, basic touch typing and other applications of our computer system at school:  email, internet, intranet etc.  It also instructs students on how to access, collate and use information.  It has components of study skills, project strategies, question attack strategies, as well as literacy and numeracy.

This is a very effective way to ensure a good start to secondary education as it addresses many of the across curricula issues that students encounter in the transition from primary school to high school.

Years 9 and 10

In addition to the compulsory courses of Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Australian History, Australian Geography and PDHPE, students choose electives from a wide range of courses including Design and Technology, Food Technology, Textiles and Design, Industrial Technology (timber, metal and multimedia), Information Software, Commerce, French, Indonesian, Music, Drama, Dance, Visual Arts and Physical Activity and Sport Studies.

Years 11 and 12

In Years 11 and 12 students choose their pattern of study from a wide range of courses in consultation with our staff. They must include a Religious Education course and an English course.

Xavier Catholic College’s academic program is designed for students who are seeking further tertiary study as well as students working towards achieving a well-rounded education in the pursuit of employment.

Students can choose a pattern of study which enables them to acquire an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) and can also include Vocational Education courses, if they want. These involve industry work placement and are dual accredited nationally (Certificate II or III) and for the HSC.

Offering flexible alternatives to their education, our students have opportunities to study online or through distance education to meet individual course needs.
