Principal's Message

Dear Parents, Carers, Students, and Friends of the Xavier Catholic College Community,

Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement of your children. Together, we continue to strengthen and build the culture of our College community. Since our Week 2 newsletter, there have been many significant moments of learning, growth, and celebration across Xavier Catholic College.

Congratulations to:

  • Our Year 10 students and staff for their very successful and memorable Retreats at Bornhoffen. These days of reflection and community are such a vital part of our faith and formation journey.
  • Our Year 12 students and teachers on the successful completion of the Trial HSC Examinations. Our students have also been working diligently to finalise HSC major works, major projects, individual and group performance pieces, compositions, orals, and personal interest projects. We are very proud of their commitment and the outstanding support and mentoring offered by our dedicated staff.
  • Our sporting teams and individual athletes who have competed and excelled in their respective competitions. Their efforts and achievements reflect the pride and spirit of Xavier.
  • Our Year 11 students who have nominated for student leadership roles commencing in Term 4. In particular, I commend the students who have been interviewed and shortlisted to present their leadership speeches to the College community. Best wishes to our ten students vying for the position of College Captain.
  • All students and staff who contributed to the success of our College Athletics Participation Carnival earlier this week. It was a wonderful day of fun, culture, and friendship building, with great spirit on display across all Houses.

We have much to celebrate and to be proud of at Xavier. Thank you again for your partnership and support in all that we do.

Mrs Denise Barnard (2002 - 2024) - Rest in Peace

The College community recently lost another ‘giant’ with news of the passing of former staff member, Mrs Denise Barnard, on Tuesday, 5 August, after a courageous health battle.

Denise was a cherished member of our College, having commenced her service in 2002 as the founder and long-standing Canteen Manager. From humble beginnings in the demountable in the undercover area to the Canteen as we know it today, Denise served the College with unwavering dedication, warmth, and generosity for over two decades.

Throughout those years, the Barnard family has been deeply embedded in the life of Xavier. Her husband Les, two sons, and a granddaughter have all been part of the College community. Together, they have made an enduring impact on the fabric of our College.

We are truly grateful for the legacy Denise leaves behind. Her commitment, care, and service will never be forgotten. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

The Importance of Punctuality

One area I would like to highlight at this stage of the term is the importance of punctuality. Being on time to school and to class is a simple but very significant life skill. Research consistently shows that punctuality not only supports better learning outcomes, but also develops habits of responsibility, respect, and self-discipline that are valuable well beyond the classroom.

Being on time costs nothing but means so much. It communicates commitment, reliability and respect for others. Conversely, the attitude that “it does not matter if I am late” is something we need to eliminate. Every minute of learning time is precious, and when a student arrives late, it impacts not only their own progress but also the flow of the class.

This is an area where we need the support of parents and carers. Please help us by reinforcing with your child the value of punctuality—arriving to school and to each class ready to learn and contribute. Together, we can do better in building this important attribute in life.

Father's Day Breakfast

Fathers and carers of our Year 9 and Year 10 students are warmly invited to our Father’s Day Breakfast at Xavier Catholic College, a special opportunity to celebrate and share time with your son or daughter.

  • Date: Friday, 5 September
  • Time: 7:30 am – 9:00 am
  • Location: Canteen Undercroft

Come along with your son/daughter and enjoy a relaxed breakfast featuring bacon & egg rolls, ham & cheese croissants, fresh fruit platters, and tea & coffee.

Please join us as we celebrate the important role of dads in our community.

Please complete this RSVP by COB on Tuesday, 2 September.

Term 3 Xavier Parent Community Group - Special Presentation

We are very pleased to invite all parents, carers, and staff to a special Xavier Catholic College Term 3 Parent Community Group session, featuring guest speaker Chris Hudson. Chris will be presenting on the topic: "Communicating Effectively with Teenagers"   - MP4

Chris is a parent, coach, speaker, and trainer who specialises in helping adults connect with young people in ways that are constructive, respectful and effective. His presentation promises to be both practical and insightful—especially in the often challenging area of parent-teen communication. We will be hosting this event on:

  • Wednesday, 3 September
  • Xavier Catholic College Ballina
  • 6.15 pm for refreshments for a 6.30 pm start in the Magis Centre

Please register at – bit.ly/XCCTEENS

Please note this event replaces our regular Term 3, Week 5 Parent Community Group Meeting, originally scheduled for 21 August.

There is no cost to attend, and all parents and carers are warmly encouraged to come along. We believe it will be an evening of great value for anyone raising teenagers in today’s world. We hope to see a strong turnout and look forward to welcoming many of you there.

We encourage parents and carers to share information about our College within the community to inspire additional enrolments. Assistant Principal: Learning & Teaching

Congratulations to Year 12

I would like to warmly congratulate our Year 12 students on the completion of their HSC Trial Examinations. The invigilators commented on the outstanding courtesy and focus exhibited by the vast majority of students.  While this is a particularly challenging time for students who complete a large number of protracted examinations in a compressed time period, it is also a time of growth and development.

Additionally, I would like to acknowledge and thank our dedicated and generous staff. Many teachers hold after-school lessons, lunchtime rehearsals, and holiday workshops, and work late into the night, providing feedback to students. Our students greatly benefit from the expertise and generosity of the staff.

HSC Major Projects, Submitted Works, and Practical Examinations

It has been an extremely busy time at the College with numerous students in a range of courses submitting their HSC major projects and completing practical HSC examinations. Congratulations to students and teachers of Society and Culture, Textiles and Design, Industrial Technology, English Extension II, and Design and Technology.

We extend our best wishes to the students in the Visual Arts, Drama, Music, and Languages (Italian Beginners, French Beginners, and German Beginners) who have their HSC major work, practical, and speaking examinations in the next three weeks. You have the support and prayers of the entire College community.   I extend my thanks to Mrs Emma Smith, Leader of Curriculum, and the administrative staff in the Educational Services team, for their support in this process of certification and uploading,  packing, and posting of projects!

Maximising Learning Growth - Study Skills

For Year 11 and 12 students, the final weeks of this term are of great importance to their learning growth. Students are strongly encouraged to continue focusing on implementing teachers’ feedback and consolidating their knowledge of each course in their study pattern. Students should continue to work closely with their teachers and use a range of evidence-based practices to consolidate their learning.  Strategies include: creating detailed revision notes and dot-point summaries, completing past examination papers under timed examination conditions.  Other study strategies - such as spaced repetition, active recall, dual coding, and Cornell notes - are highly recommended.

School attendance is expected every day for the remainder of the term.  Our desire is for every student to enjoy the final days of their secondary education, safe and supported in the warm embrace of their peers, teachers, and the entire school community.

PISA Testing

This year, Xavier Catholic College was randomly selected to participate in one of the international sample assessments of the National Assessment Program (NAP), the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

Australia is one of nearly one hundred countries participating.  The data gathered provides valuable insights into the national education system.  The results help education authorities across Australia evaluate the effectiveness of their systems and learn from the policies and practices of other countries.  I sincerely thank the 25 students, from years 9 and 10, who were randomly selected, for their participation in these tests, in addition to our Science teachers, who were also involved in the collection of data.

Minimum Standards Testing

This week, Year 10 students participated in the HSC Minimum Standards Reading Test as part of their progression through the HSC Pathway.  This is the third of the Minimum Standards Tests; students completed the Writing and Numeracy assessments last term.  The HSC Minimum Standards Tests assess fundamental literacy and numeracy skills. All students must meet the minimum standard in Reading, Writing, and Numeracy to be eligible for the HSC.

Catch-up tests for students across year levels will continue next term.  I thank Ms Ebony Milgate for her oversight of the testing and for her ongoing efforts to support the improvement of literacy outcomes for our students.

Year 11 Examination Block

Year 11 examinations commence on Monday, 8 September.

All Year 11 students are encouraged to consolidate their course material and focus on a program of study to ensure they are well-prepared for the forthcoming examination block.

Students are reminded to carefully review the Year 11 examination timetable and ensure they attend all examinations at the scheduled time. Students are only required to be on-site when they have a scheduled examination and are encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes before the examination begins. If a student has two examinations scheduled on the same day, they must remain at the College during the lunch break and may not leave between examinations. If they do not have an examination scheduled on a particular day within the examination timetable, students may study at home or access the College library. Any student who wishes to access the library to study is required to sign in at the front office and attend in uniform. All students are required to wear their full school uniform for all scheduled examinations.

Please be mindful that some afternoon examinations will not conclude until late in the afternoon. Alternative transport may need to be arranged on these occasions.

If a student is unable to attend an examination due to illness or misadventure, please call the College office on the morning of the examination. Medical certificates and additional paperwork will be required and must be submitted with an Absence from Assessment form available on the College website/Learning tab/Assessment Information/Year 11/Absence form Assessment and Request for Special Consideration.

A sense of balance is vital at this time, and students are reminded of the importance of taking time for relaxation and nurturing their wellbeing in the lead-up to, and during, the Year 11 examinations.

I would like to wish the Year 11 students well for the upcoming examination block; the prayers of the College community will be with them during this time.

Year 11 reports will be available to download via Compass in Term 4.

Managing Well-being

It is normal for students to experience stress in the lead-up to examinations.   A moderate level of stress can aid success by increasing motivation, but at high levels, it becomes unhelpful and can actually reduce academic performance. This sheet provided by NESA is designed to help parents offer support to their children in preparing for examinations by recognising when stress is too much—and if it is, how to reduce it.

Year 7-10 Progress Reports and Reflection Goal Setting Insight Survey

Students in Years 7-10 will be issued a Progress Report on Wednesday, 17 September, which focuses on each student’s learning behaviours, indicating their progress in their subjects. Progress Reports are issued in Terms 1 and 3, alternating with formal academic reports which are provided twice yearly, to provide families more regular feedback on their child's/children’s learning.

Parents and carers are strongly encouraged to work with their child/ren to complete the Reflection and Goal Setting Insight Survey, which will be shared the same day as the Progress Report.  In our Tell Them From Me data, our parent community has indicated that they would like more information about their child’s progress, and this is your opportunity to have a structured conversation with your children and gather more information about their learning at school.  It is also an excellent opportunity to support your child’s capacity to reflect on their education, set goals, and consider practical actions that will empower them to achieve them.

We recognise parents are their children's first teachers, and in building partnerships between home and school, we have the opportunity to improve students’ learning and wellbeing outcomes.  Please contact classroom teachers, Heads of House, Mrs Emma Smith (Leader of Curriculum), or me if you would like to discuss your child’s progress.

Year 12 Reports

Year 12 reports will be available to download from Compass on Friday, 5 September, after 4pm. Please contact classroom teachers, Heads of House, Mrs Emma Smith (Leader of Curriculum), or me if you would like to discuss your child’s progress.

Year 12 Graduation Mass & Awards Ceremony

All Year 12 parents are warmly invited to attend the College’s Year 12 Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, 25 September 2025. Parents have been emailed an invitation that includes details regarding the time and location of this auspicious occasion. The College community is looking forward to acknowledging and celebrating the HSC class of 2025.

Preparations for Timor Immersion

Excitement is building as our 2025 Timor Immersion Team prepares for their journey to Timor-Leste during the Term 3 holiday break. This transformative experience will see 10 of our Year 11 students travel to our sister school community, where they will strengthen friendships, share learning, and grow as young people who are globally engaged, open to diversity, and able to work respectfully across cultures and worldviews. In doing so, they will be living out our College mission to ‘Act Justly’ and be Women and Men for and with Others, standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Timor-Leste.

Fundraising efforts are already well underway. From the recent Casual Clothes Day to Nagle House’s efforts selling blue slushies at the Athletics Carnival, every dollar raised will directly support our sister school. The team has also been busy gathering prizes for the Timor Giant Raffle, which will run across Weeks 7–9. Tickets will be sold at the College, with the raffle drawn in Week 10, Monday, 22 September at lunchtime in the Amphitheatre.

Some of the fantastic prizes on offer include:

  • $100 Lennox Pizza Voucher
  • 5 × $10 Yoflo vouchers,
  • Yoflo + Frank Green Water Bottle & Insulated Bowl (includes 10% off frozen yoghurt refills)
  • Box of chocolates and lollies
  • Canteen Fast Pass
  • $25 Coffee & Kitchen Voucher
  • Mr Fear’s Carpark for Weeks 1 & 2 of Term 4 (available for staff and driving students – not for resale)

We thank our students, families, and community for their continued support of our Sister School. Every contribution makes a real difference in the lives of our friends in Timor-Leste.

Vinnies Winter Sleepout at Xavier

Homelessness is a growing issue, and the Vinnies NSW Community Sleepout is a powerful initiative designed to spotlight this challenge and drive positive change. The event raises vital funds to support vulnerable people across NSW, while also providing participants with the opportunity to better understand the realities of homelessness and disadvantage.

Since its inception in 2018, the Sleepout has brought communities together across the state, raising over $1 million to support people in both regional and metropolitan areas who are doing it tough. It is a true example of locals supporting locals.

On Thursday, 28 August, 30 Xavier students joined this important initiative by “sleeping rough” at the College. The evening featured a guest talk from Mr Michael Vella, former Principal and long-time St Vincent de Paul volunteer, who shared his insights into the complex nature of homelessness and poverty in our local area. He emphasised how fundraising provides a “hand up” rather than a “handout,” and highlighted the ongoing needs of those experiencing disadvantage, domestic violence, isolation, or the hardship of living in cars and struggling to make ends meet.

Through their participation, our students gained a deeper awareness of the issues facing many in our community and the importance of showing compassion in action.

Year 11 Students Take Action for Global Maternal Health with Zonta Birthing Kit Incursion

On Friday, 8 August, our Year 11 Catholic Faith in Action students took part in a powerful and practical incursion as part of our Term 3 focus on Ignatian service. In partnership with Zonta, a renowned international charity dedicated to empowering women worldwide. Students participated in the assembly of birthing kits for women in developing countries.

In just a double period, our students managed to assemble an incredible 237 birthing kits, each of which represents a woman potentially saved from life-threatening infection during childbirth. Every kit contains basic but vital supplies, such as gloves, soap, string, plastic sheeting, and gauze. This enables safer births in areas where medical care is limited or non-existent.

The energy and engagement in the room were palpable with our all-male student group busily assembling the birthing kits while pleasantly conversing with the Zonta volunteers throughout the afternoon. The teamwork was a true reflection of our call to be Men and Women for Others, demonstrating the Catholic values of compassion, dignity, and global solidarity in action.

Not only was this incursion a meaningful way to live out our faith, but it also contributed two hours toward students’ Certificate II in Active Volunteering. It was a rewarding experience that left many students inspired by the real-world impact of their efforts.

We are proud of our Year 11 students for their dedication to social justice and thank Zonta for the opportunity to partner in this life-saving initiative. With 237 kits packed and ready to send, the impact of this session will ripple far beyond our school walls.

MacKillop House Fundraiser

During NAIDOC Week, MacKillop House proudly hosted a fundraising event to support St Francis Xavier School in Daly River, Northern Territory. Thanks to the generosity and spirit of the Xavier College community, we raised an impressive $839.76 to contribute to their student attendance rewards program.

The day was a vibrant celebration of culture and community. Students enjoyed a casual clothes day and a delicious selection of NAIDOC-inspired food, lovingly prepared and served by a dedicated team. We extend our sincere thanks to the staff and students who helped make the day a success.

A special mention must go to our Year 10 MacKillop students and our MacKillop House Captains, whose leadership, energy and teamwork ensured the event ran smoothly and with great spirit.

Funds will be transferred to St Francis Xavier School shortly, and we look forward to hopefully receiving a photo or letter from their students to share the impact of this initiative with our community.

Thank you once again to everyone who supported this meaningful cause in the spirit of St Mary MacKillop - ‘Never see a need without doing something about it.’

MacKillop House Liturgy - "Pilgrims of Hope"

MacKillop House recently gathered for our annual liturgy, inspired by the 2025 College theme “Pilgrims of Hope.” The liturgy was a powerful reflection on the life and legacy of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop - Australia’s first saint and a woman of deep courage, resilience and faith.

The theme encouraged all students to consider how we can walk in Mary’s footsteps: with kindness, compassion and an unwavering belief in a better world. Students explored Mary’s journey - from humble beginnings in Penola to her tireless efforts to educate children in need, even in the face of poverty and injustice. Her story reminds us that hope is not just a feeling - it is a daily choice to serve, to love and to act with courage.

A sacred space featuring images of Mary MacKillop helped to centre us as a community of faith. The entrance song and readings led us into meaningful reflection, while a moving Gospel reading reminded us to see Christ in the “least, the lonely and the lost” - just as Mary did.

A heartfelt thanks to the students who brought this liturgy to life with their reverence, strength and voice:

  • Our House Captains - Zac Thick, Georgia McLean, Charlotte Fox, Eve Nicolson and Jerridan Tulloch for their powerful reflections and leadership.
  • Our readers from Years 7 to 11 who led the prayers of the faithful with maturity and compassion: Toby Meany, Darcey Anderson, Jacob Fear, Owen Kilby and Isabella Clarson.
  • A special thank you to Isabella Clarson, Alani Lamont and Charlie Boyle for the beautiful musical performance that concluded our liturgy with grace.

We also acknowledge and thank Mrs Howard, remembered during the liturgy as a true Pilgrim of Hope, for her service to our community and her impact on so many.

To all in the MacKillop House community: may we continue to live with lion-hearted courage, and like Mary MacKillop, “never see a need without doing something about it.”

Let us walk together—as Pilgrims of Hope.

Head of House - MacKillop

Year 12 Drama

The Year 12 drama students have been hard at work, and we're excited to share some of their recent accomplishments and upcoming events.

Last term, our senior drama students attended a workshop day at Emmanuel Anglican College. They had the opportunity to work with students from other schools alongside local and interstate theatre professionals, focusing on developing their group playbuilding skills. This experience was crucial as they prepared for their upcoming group performances.

A huge congratulations to the students who submitted their Individual Projects - Costume Design to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) for marking. The projects were a testament to their creativity and theatrical vision.

Finally, we wish our Year 12 drama students the very best of luck, or “chookas”, as they perform their Individual and Group Performances for the HSC markers next week. This is the culmination of all their hard work throughout the year. The students will be presenting their work at “Centrestage”, a showcase on Monday, September 8th at 6 pm in the Drama Studio. We invite friends and family to come and support them.

Year 12 Textiles and Design Projects

Our Year 12 students have submitted their Major Textiles projects, which have been sent off to Sydney for marking. This year, students showcased a diverse range of creative works, including costumes, wall hangings, and culturally inspired pieces exploring identity.

The projects were briefly displayed at school, giving staff and students the opportunity to appreciate the talent and effort involved in each creation.

We look forward to sharing more information about these impressive projects once the marking is complete.

Congratulations to all the Year 12 students for their hard work, and a special thank you to Ms. Lampe, their dedicated class teacher, for her guidance and support throughout the process.

Year 9 Child Studies in Action: Building Connections at Fox St Preschool

Our Year 9 Child Studies students recently enjoyed a wonderful learning experience at Fox St Preschool. The visit provided an opportunity for students to see first-hand how early childhood services support children’s learning and development.

Throughout the visit, students engaged with children through play, storytelling and activities, helping them to build positive connections while observing the important role educators play in shaping early experiences.

The excursion highlighted the value of Child Studies, giving students authentic, practical insights into child development, community support services, and the skills needed to work with young children. This hands-on experience not only reinforced classroom learning but also inspired many to consider future careers in education and childcare.

One student reflected, “It was such a fun experience. I learned so much about how children think and learn — it made everything we’ve studied in class come to life.”

Year 10 Child Studies Connect with Harmony Early Learning Centre

Our Year 10 Child Studies students recently visited Harmony Early Learning Centre, where they had the opportunity to observe, interact, and build meaningful connections with the children and staff. The visit gave students a valuable insight into the importance of early childhood education and the supportive role services like Harmony play in the lives of young children and their families.

As part of their current assessment task, students are exploring how children can learn about culture and community through play and shared experiences. The centre’s Acknowledgement of Country will serve as the foundation for an activity that the Year 10 students will design and later teach to the preschool children. This exciting project allows students to combine their classroom learning with hands-on experience, while also promoting cultural understanding and respect in early childhood settings.

The excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to see the real-world application of their studies, strengthen community ties, and further develop the skills they will need to work with young children in the future.

“All students are to be commended for their enthusiastic participation in the visits and for the respect and maturity they demonstrated towards both the staff and children at the centres.”

Careers Expo

At the recent Lismore Careers Expo, four of our talented Year 12 Hospitality students represented the school in the Barista Championship, hosted by North Coast Community College.

Competing under the team name “The Steam Queens”, our students took part in three intense elimination rounds, each requiring them to prepare a variety of espresso coffees within strict time limits. While the team was knocked out in the first round, they demonstrated impressive skill, teamwork, and enthusiasm throughout the competition.

Book Week 2025

A wet week was perfectly timed to coincide with Book Week 2025. The XCC library planned a series of daily activities designed to please a variety of interests:

  • Movie Monday with the film Percy Jackson, accompanied by delicious-smelling popcorn.
  • Trivia Tuesday was a book-themed book.
  • Wacky Wednesday had students trying to find all types of topsy-turvy library items.
  • Thursday Wordsday had a Scattegories-style word game.
  • Friend Friday gave the opportunity to ask some questions and get to know someone new.

Staff had fun on Friday with a special dress-up event, and there were lots of entries in the annual ‘Guess What the Teacher is Reading’ competition, with many perfect scores, meaning the book voucher prize had to go to a lucky draw. We’ll have to make it trickier next year!

2025 Byron Writers Festival

“Reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.” - John Locke

Term 3 has been very busy for the crew up in the English Faculty and all for very good reasons. The teachers are working diligently to ensure students are engaged, extended, given relevant feedback and accurate results, as well as given enriching activities outside of the classroom.  So in Week 2 on August 7, a core group of 90 students from Years 9 and 11 embarked on an exciting excursion to the Byron Bay Writers Festival at the Bangalow Showground, accompanied by their English teachers. This annual event, renowned for showcasing the finest in contemporary writing, provided a fantastic opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the world of literature, storytelling, and the rich world of media and journalism.

Our Xavier students were fortunate to spend the day in the sunshine listening to accomplished authors, inspiring guest speakers and energetic teachers who enthusiastically discussed their work and life. They had the unique opportunity to meet with some of their favourite authors and have their books signed. Marcus Zuzak, Isobelle Carmody. Michael Robothom, Anita Heiss and local dynamo Sarah Armstrong.

The festival wasn’t just about listening, it was about participation. The Q&A sessions after the presentations allowed our students to engage with authors directly, asking thought-provoking questions about writing techniques, the publishing industry, and how to overcome writer’s block. These interactions proved invaluable for our budding writers.

Our own Year 9 student, Liberty McKenzie, was honoured in a presentation for young writers as she won a competition for her evocative narrative entered into the Southern Cross Young Writers competition earlier this year. Congratulations to our budding young writer!

Another highlight for the students and teachers alike was meeting novelists after their presentations, purchasing their books and having them signed. Signed copies of books became a treasured commodity and the anticipation of reading new novels was almost palpable. Sharing these experiences with other students from the Northern Rivers was also a bonus for our students. Meeting authors and recognising the potential for all people to become authors enlightened our students and opened up new avenues of thought for career patterns forward.

As we headed back to school, the bus was abuzz with excitement, with many students already planning to delve deeper into writing projects or explore new books they had discovered and purchased at the festival. The day proved to be more than just an educational experience; it was an inspiring journey that fostered a deeper appreciation for literature and the role of storytelling in our shared society.

A big thank you to all involved in the planning and preparation for this event. The English faculty and students are very grateful for the opportunities of engaging with the rich arts and artists of the Northern Rivers and beyond. And most especially, thank you to our students for their enthusiasm and participation. We look forward to seeing how this experience shapes our students’ future creative endeavours!

2025 Xavier College Championship Athletics Carnival

Despite an unpromising weather forecast for our third and final opportunity to host the Xavier College Championship Athletics Carnival, we were truly fortunate to enjoy clear skies, warm sunshine, and a vibrant, supportive atmosphere. The presence of parents, grandparents, and wider members of our College community significantly enriched the spirit of the day.

The Championship Athletics Carnival is a distinguished, student-nominated event that provides a platform for individual athletic excellence. Outstanding performances at this level pave the way for progression to the Diocesan Carnival, with the potential to advance further to the NSWCCC and eventually the State Championships across a range of disciplines.

Field Events

Field events were conducted later in Term 2, with Shot Put, Javelin, and Long Jump taking place on campus during lunch breaks. Sincere thanks are extended to the dedicated staff and enthusiastic students who ensured the smooth execution of these events. We were especially pleased with the high participation rates among our junior cohort, and we commend our Year 7–10 students for their commendable engagement and sportsmanship.

Track Events
Track events, including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m races, as well as the Discus throw, were held at Chickiba Park. Despite a strong southerly headwind in the final stretch, several records were impressively broken, highlighting the remarkable calibre of our athletes.

We extend our gratitude to the exceptional staff whose tireless efforts ensured the success of the carnival:
Mr G. Smith, Mrs J. Ferris, Mrs T. Paton-Kelly, Mr G. Black, Mr C. Blair, Mr A. Colman, Mr L. Lowe, Mrs D. Kinkead, and Miss M. Anderson.

Our brand new Lawn Bowls team has been training at Club Lennox in preparation for their debut at the Far North Coast (FNC) Lawn Bowls Championships.

The Xavier Catholic College Lawn Bowls team made their debut at the Far North Coast Championships on 7 August 2025 at Alstonville Plateau Bowls & Sports Club, after training at Club Lennox with strong support from parents and grandparents.

Eighteen students formed six teams, competing in two-bowl triples across eight-end games. A special congratulations to our highest-placed team, an all-girls side made up of Sadie C, Evan D, and Remi C, who delivered strong performances all day. Close behind were Liam T, Mason W, and Billy G, who also showcased excellent teamwork and skill.

Dio Junior and Intermediate Basketball Tournament

The Xavier Catholic College basketball teams recently competed in the Dio Junior and Intermediate Basketball Tournament, showcasing great skill, determination, and team spirit across all year levels.

In the Year 7/8 Girls competition, our team fought hard in every match, showing determination and resilience against some very strong opponents. Their teamwork and positive attitude stood out, and they were rewarded with a strong 5th-place finish in a highly competitive pool.

The Year 7/8 Boys also put in a fantastic effort across all of their games. They displayed great sportsmanship, encouraging each other on and off the field, and continued to improve with each match. Their hard work earned them 6th place overall, a result they can be proud of, given the tough competition.

The 9/10 boys team showed impressive skill and determination throughout the tournament. Despite winning only 2 out of their five games, they competed fiercely in every match and pushed their opponents to the limit. Their teamwork, hustle, and sportsmanship left a lasting impression and set a strong foundation for future success.

In a stunning display of skill and unwavering determination, Xavier's 9/10 girls' team has emerged victorious at the recent Diocesan tournament held in Port Macquarie. The team's exceptional performance throughout the competition saw them dominate the court and ultimately secure the championship title.

From the first match, it was clear that the Xavier team were a force to be reckoned with. Their passes were precise, their defence was unyielding, and their teamwork was seamless. While every team brought their best to the tournament, the Xavier girls were consistently a step ahead, showcasing a level of play that was simply more skilful than their opponents.

More than just their technical ability, what truly set this team apart was their incredible determination. They fought for every ball, pushed through tough moments, and never gave up, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship. This hard-fought victory is a testament to their dedication, training, and the strong bond they share as a team. Congratulations to Xavier's 9/10 girls on a well-deserved win! Here we come, NSWCCC State basketball in Sydney!

NRCC Netball

It was a fantastic day at the NRCC Netball Gala, and we were fortunate to enjoy the whole day without any rain. Our teams represented Xavier Catholic College with great sportsmanship, teamwork, and determination across all age groups.

  • The 7/8 Girls played strongly throughout the day and secured 3rd place.
  • The 9/10 Girls showed great skill and consistency, finishing in an impressive 2nd place.
  • The 11/12 Girls fought hard against tough competition and achieved 6th place.

Congratulations to all students involved for their efforts on and off the court, and thank you to the staff and supporters who made the day such a success.

Individual Achievements

Australian National Championships - Sunshine Coast 2025

During Weeks 4 and 5, Luca McPherson and Brianna Walsh travelled to the Sunshine Coast to compete for the Ballina Bullfrogs at the Australian National Tenpin Bowling Championships.

Luca competed in the Ultimate Tenpin Cup Junior, making it through to the second stage before being knocked out. A strong effort against some of the best junior bowlers in the country.

Brianna had an outstanding run. After qualifying in the top 10, she advanced directly into the match-play rounds (head-to-head games). From there, she advanced all the way to the stepladder finals, finishing in 3rd place overall.

In the Ultimate Teams Clash Junior, the Ballina Bullfrogs boys’ team and girls’ team finished 1st place. Even more impressively, the club also won the overall team title for the third consecutive year, demonstrating the squad's strength and consistency. Brianna also made the all-star team for the team event, meaning she earned the 5th most points among all the girls' bowlers in the tournament. A fantastic result!

Congratulations to Luca and Brianna on their achievements!
