Principal's Message

Dear Parents, Carers, Students, and Friends of the Xavier Catholic College Community,

As we move into Term 3, I want to thank all members of our Xavier Catholic College community for what has been a respectful, settled and purposeful start to the term. The tone has been one of focus and intent — a sign that our students and staff understand the significance of this phase of the school year.

Term 3 marks what many call “the business term” of the academic calendar. The first two terms were about building strong foundations — academically, socially and spiritually. Now is the time to consolidate and extend those efforts. For our senior students, especially, this is a critical period. But the message applies to all: success doesn’t happen by chance. It is earned through consistent effort, a positive attitude and the willingness to take responsibility for your learning and for your actions.

To the many students who turn up each day ready to do their best — often without complaint or recognition — I offer my sincere congratulations. You are the backbone of this College. You understand that progress is rarely flashy. It’s built on the “hard yards” — doing the readings, submitting the drafts, asking for help, listening with intent, showing up even on the tough days. You just do it. Not for applause, but because it’s the right thing to do.

This quiet determination and work ethic is something we value deeply at Xavier. It’s the X factor that makes a difference — in your growth, your relationships, and ultimately your life beyond school.

As a Catholic community, we continue to place all that we do into God’s hands. We pray for a successful and rewarding term ahead for every student, every staff member and every family. May we support one another, challenge one another, and walk together with purpose and hope.

Let’s each strive to make a meaningful and significant contribution to our wonderful Xavier Catholic College community.

Mrs Mary Howard (2002 – 2025) – Rest in Peace

On Saturday, 26 July, the College lost a ‘giant’ in our community and in the Parish. The passing of Mary Howard after a long and courageous battle with cancer has left a big hole in our community.

Mary was a cherished member of the Xavier Catholic College Ballina community and St Francis Xavier Ballina Parish since January 2002, serving faithfully as both a teacher, a leader and an active Parish member. She was an amazing lady who poured her heart into her vocation, profoundly shaping the lives of countless students through her exceptional teaching and unwavering care. A person of deep integrity and profound humanity, Mary inspired the faith and spiritual lives of many. She truly was a 'Saint' among us — someone who lived her life with quiet strength, deep compassion, and resolute dignity.

Mary was not only a remarkable educator but also a friend, mentor, and loyal colleague to so many within our community. Her warmth, wisdom, and humour made our College a better place. She will be sorely missed.

Mary Howard had a deep love for our Jesuit charism, which was evident in the way she lived and worked each day. Her unwavering commitment to finding God in all things shaped not only her personal faith journey but also inspired those around her—students and colleagues alike. Mary brought the Ignatian values to life through her teaching, her leadership, and her presence. She modelled reflection, discernment, and service, and helped others to see that faith and justice go hand in hand. Her contribution to the charism of our College community was profound, lasting, and deeply treasured.

God has now taken Mary home. We all take comfort in knowing she is free from pain and resting in God’s loving embrace. Fly high, Mary. Your light will continue to shine in the lives you have touched so deeply.

Please continue to hold in your prayers Mary’s beloved family — her husband Dom and their four children - Amy, Jack, Harry, and Bill - her siblings Claire, Jane, Paul, and Matthew, and her colleagues and parishioners at the College and the Church. May God bless them and strengthen them as they navigate the sorrow of this loss.

Eternal rest grant unto Mary, O Lord,

and let perpetual light shine upon her.

May Mary rest in peace.

Amen.

A reminder that Monday, 4 August, will be a student supervision day only due to Mrs Howard’s funeral. A Compass email has been forwarded to all parents. The College returns to normal operations on Tuesday, 5 August.

 New Staff – Term 3

A warm welcome to our new staff who have joined us this term:

  • Lauren Raguse – Inclusion Teacher + Year 7 Mathematics (replacing Moira Waterfall)
  • Danielle Kinkead – Inclusion Teacher (replacing Erin Buie)
  • Lachlan Smith – Music Teacher (replacing Ambrose Nicholls-Skene)
  • Lauryn Bromhead – Executive Assistant to the Principal (replacing Tash Toigo)

We wish them every happiness and success in their roles, and I encourage all staff to offer their support and collegiality as they settle into our community.

We also welcome and thank Kellie Sproule, Cassy Duell and Giselle Want, who all take on additional days this semester. Thank you also to Nikki Cronan for her continued leadership in the Inclusion & Diversity Faculty.

Unbroken Attendance Awards – Term 2

Earlier this week I acknowledged and congratulated the 96 students who received Unbroken Attendance Certificates for Term 2, 2025. This is an outstanding achievement and a clear reflection of the resilience, commitment, and grit shown by these students in the second term of the year.

As noted in the previous Newsletter, regular attendance is a key ingredient in academic success and personal growth, and we are proud to celebrate students who make it a priority. I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to our parents and carers for your continued support in helping your children arrive at school each day ready to learn.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2025

In Week 1 of term we stopped as a college community and reflected with our Indigenous brothers and sisters on the significance of NAIDOC. The powerful theme "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy" honours the enduring legacy of our First Nations ancestors, celebrates the strength of our youth, and looks forward with hope to a future shaped by strong, visionary leadership. It is important as a College community that we use this opportunity to continue engaging meaningfully with our students and continuing to foster a culture of respect, celebration, and inclusion.

A special thank you to Ms Tamera Bolt for her thoughtful organisation of the Assembly and to our Indigenous students for their strong presence and involvement. We are also grateful to Aunty Kylie and the dancers from Lismore and Holy Family for sharing culture and story so powerfully with us.

Days like yesterday remind us of the strength of our Xavier community—genuine, engaged, and united in our commitment to reconciliation and in standing with our Indigenous brothers and sisters.

Feast of St Ignatius of Loyola

As a Jesuit Companion School, on Thursday, 31 July, we celebrated the Feast Day of St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits. Born in Spain in 1491, Ignatius was a soldier who experienced a profound spiritual conversion after being wounded in battle. He dedicated his life to serving God, ultimately establishing the Jesuits—a religious order known for its commitment to education, missionary work, and spiritual formation. His legacy lives on in the Jesuit motto "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam"—"For the Greater Glory of God"—and his Spiritual Exercises, which continue to guide our College community in prayer, reflection, and discernment.

I thank Mrs Janine Wallace, Head of Ignatius House, and her student leaders for celebrating a meaningful and prayerful liturgy to celebrate the Feast Day.

Xavier Parent Community Group Meeting – Term 3

We are very pleased to invite all parents and carers to a special Term 3 Parent Community Group session, featuring guest speaker Chris Hudson. Chris will be presenting on the topic: "Communicating Effectively with Teenagers"

Chris is a parent, coach, speaker, and trainer who specialises in helping adults connect with young people in ways that are constructive, respectful and effective. His presentation promises to be both practical and insightful—especially in the often challenging area of parent-teen communication.

We will be hosting this event on:

  • Wednesday, 3 September
  • Xavier Catholic College Ballina
  • 6.15 pm for refreshments for a 6.30 pm start in the Magis Centre

Please note this event replaces our regular Term 3, Week 5 Parent Community Group Meeting, originally scheduled for 21 August.

There is no cost to attend, and all parents and carers are warmly encouraged to come along. We believe it will be an evening of great value for anyone raising teenagers in today’s world. For more information about Chris and his work, you can visit his website: understandingteenagers.com.au

We hope to see a strong turnout and look forward to welcoming many of you there.

We have space for enrolments in 2025 and 2026

The College is currently accepting additional enrolments for Years 7 to 12 for the 2025 academic year, and for Years 8 to 12 for 2026. We encourage parents and carers to share information about our College within the community to inspire additional enrolments. Interested families can contact our Enrolments Team for more details or to arrange a meeting with the Principal to discuss enrolling at Xavier this year. We look forward to welcoming new families to our Xavier community.

Assistant Principal: Learning & Teaching

Welcome to Semester 2

Welcome to Semester 2!  We are only two weeks into the term, but we have already issued close to six hundred reports for students in Years 7-10, run trial HSC practical examinations, hosted a Shakespearean drama troupe to entertain and educate students, and taken Year 11 to the University Roadshow. We have opened the doors to the College to welcome hundreds of parents onsite to several Award Ceremonies and Parent Teacher Conferences.  There is no doubt that the College is humming with purposeful activity and events intentionally curated to provide students the very best opportunity to develop their potential, both within and beyond the classroom.  I encourage all students to be open and appreciative of all the College offers them, and to seize the opportunities afforded to them.

This week, we were reminded of the importance of seizing the day and living life to the full when we heard about the passing of our much-loved colleague, Mary Howard.  Mary was a passionate educator and an integral part of the College leadership team for an extended period.  I worked most closely with Mary when she served the College as the Leader of Curriculum in 2023, when her incredibly sharp intellect, teamed with an endlessly compassionate heart, was made abundantly clear in her daily work. Mary lived by the Ignatian calling to “find God in all things”. We are heartbroken by Mary’s passing, but stand ready to celebrate her legacy and continue the work of building the College as a centre of excellence.

Year 7-10 Award Ceremonies

The vital role of parents as the first educators of their children is unquestionable. Research provides evidence that the more a parent is actively involved in school life, the greater the chance of success for their children; I sincerely thank parents and carers for their participation in many elements of College life.

It was with the greatest of pleasure that the College welcomed hundreds of parents to the Year 7 - 10 Award Ceremonies this week, where we acknowledged and celebrated the academic achievements and consistent application demonstrated by students throughout Semester 1. The teaching staff at Xavier Catholic College strives to co-construct a vibrant culture of learning with our students.  We aim to provide academic care for our students and teach them that excellence is not about being better than everyone else, but about achieving one’s personal best.

As a Jesuit Companion school, we are all called to do more and be more for the glory of God and in the service of others.  Our mission is the formation of young women and men, in partnership with their families, who seek and find God in all things, possess a faith that does justice, and are men and women for others. Therefore, the constant pursuit of the Magis is key to human excellence. We challenge and support students to seek excellence in their lives with a focus on their engagement in, and commitment to, learning, effort, and achievement. We are confident that our students will use this learning to be agents of positive change in the world.

Year 7-10 Reports

Semester 1 Reports for Years 7, 8, 9, and 10, which were published via Compass last Friday. I encourage parents and students to read the report together,  to celebrate successes, and discuss learning goals for Semester 2.  Consider how you can best support your child to achieve these goals. This reflection and goal-setting process is highly valuable and underpins students’ learning and well-being.

Year 7-10 Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences for Years 7 to 10 were held on Thursday, 31 July. We thank parents for working in partnership with the staff to support and nurture our students’ learning and wellbeing. If you require any further information on your child’s academic progress, please contact the classroom teacher via email or contact the relevant Leader of Learning.

Subject Selection

Year 10 and Year 8 students submitted subject selections in Week 10, Term 2.  We are now in the process of constructing the 2026 timetable, working through processes that ensure suitable staffing and rooming arrangements are in place. This is a complex process, and we thank students and parents for their patience as we work behind the scenes to create the new timetable with its many interrelated parts.

Year 12: Trial HSC Examinations

Year 12 students will complete their final internal assessment tasks during the Trial HSC Examination period. Examinations commence on Monday, 4 August, and conclude on Monday, 18 August. Year 12 students are encouraged to consolidate all course material and to develop a revision program in order to be well prepared for the upcoming examination block.

Students are reminded to check the Trial HSC Examination timetable very carefully and ensure they attend all examinations at the scheduled time. Students are only required to be on-site when they have a scheduled examination and are encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes before the commencement of an examination. If a student has two examinations scheduled on the same day, they must remain at College during the lunch break and may not leave the College between examinations.  Please be mindful that some afternoon examinations will not conclude until late in the afternoon. On these occasions, alternative transport may need to be arranged. All students are required to be attired in full school uniform for all scheduled examinations.

If they do not have an examination scheduled on a particular day within the examination timetable, students may study at home or access the College library. Any student who wishes to access the library to study is required to sign in at the front office and attend in uniform. Students working on HSC Major Projects and practical tasks must arrange access to specialist teaching spaces with their teacher in advance via email to ensure duty of care requirements are fulfilled.

If a student is unable to attend a Trial HSC examination due to illness or misadventure, please call the College office on the morning of the examination. Medical certificates and additional paperwork will be required. They must be submitted with an Absence from Assessment form available on the College website/Learning tab/Assessment Information/Year 12/HSC Absence form Assessment/Request for Special Consideration.

A sense of balance is vital at this time, and students are reminded of the need to take time for relaxation and to nurture their wellbeing in the lead-up to and during the Trial HSC Examinations.

I would like to wish the Year 12 students well as they complete their examinations and submit their major projects in a variety of faculties; the prayers of the College community will be with them during this time. Please do not hesitate to contact either Mrs Emma Smith (Leader of Curriculum) or me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sadly, we begin the term with the heartbreaking news of the passing of our much-loved staff member, Mary Howard. I extend my deepest condolences to her family and to all in our community who knew and loved her. Mary’s presence, compassion, and commitment to our shared mission will be greatly missed.

Although it is only Week 2, Term 3 is already in full swing with a wide range of events and opportunities that reflect the vibrant life of our College. From sporting competitions, retreats, NAIDOC Week celebrations, and cultural activities to the "You Choose" road safety program, the Year 11 Careers Expo, and a performance by Bell Shakespeare, our calendar is full and enriching.

Term 3 is always a dynamic and formative time in the school year. We look forward to witnessing continued growth, not only in the classroom, but also in the school yard, in service to others, and in the everyday interactions that define our Xavier community.

Nurturing Competence at Home

This term at Xavier Catholic College, we are focusing on Competence, one of the Four Cs of Jesuit Education. Competence is not simply about achievement; it is about striving for personal excellence, acting with integrity, and embracing a growth mindset in all areas of life.

As parents and caregivers, you play a vital role in nurturing this value at home. Encouraging your child to take pride in their effort, reflect on their progress, and persist through challenges helps build both skill and character. Competence grows when young people feel supported to try, to fail, and to try again, with your encouragement and belief in their potential.

Together, let us continue to form young people who are not only capable but who use their gifts in service of others, confident, reflective, and always open to learning.

Feast of St Ignatius Loyola and St Peter Faber

On Thursday 31 July is the Feast of St Ignatius of Loyola, and on Saturday 2 August the Feast of St Peter Faber, two of the earliest Jesuits and key figures in the foundation of the Society of Jesus.

Peter Faber, born in 1506 in France, was a close companion of Ignatius and Francis Xavier. Known for his deep spirituality and gentle nature, Faber was a gifted spiritual guide and tireless advocate for peaceful dialogue during times of religious conflict. He travelled extensively across Europe, always seeking to accompany others with compassion and prayerful discernment.

Pope Francis once named Peter Faber as his favourite Jesuit. He admired Faber’s kindness, spiritual depth, and ability to find God in all things. In 2013, Pope Francis canonised him as a saint, recognising his quiet but profound impact on the Church.

St Peter Faber remains a model of humble service, inner freedom, and contemplative action, values we continue to nurture at Xavier.

Year 10 Retreat and Year 12 HSC Trials

Next week, our Year 10 Retreat program begins on Monday with students from Faber, McAuley, and Nagle Houses heading to the PCYC at Bornhoffen, set in the beautiful Numinbah Valley. This experience is a significant moment in the Xavier Catholic College journey, a time for personal reflection, connection, and growth. We encourage all Year 10 students to fully embrace this opportunity, growing as individuals, house groups, and as a united cohort, soon to step into the white shirt as the leaders of 2026 through to 2027.

At the same time, our Year 12 students will begin their HSC Trial Examinations. We wish them calm minds, strong spirits, and clarity of purpose as they give their best in this important phase. In the words of St Ignatius, may they “go forth and set the world on fire,” striving always for the Magis, that generous spirit which calls us to do more, be more, and love more in the service of others.

McAuley House Takes Action: Share the Dignity Campaign 2025

This term, McAuley House is proud to lead our annual social justice initiative by supporting the Share the Dignity campaign. Inspired by the values of Catherine McAuley and her commitment to practical mercy, we are encouraging our school community to reach out to women and girls facing hardship with dignity and compassion.

Share the Dignity is an Australian charity that works to provide essential hygiene products to women experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or doing it tough. Access to basic toiletries is something many of us take for granted, but for thousands of women in crisis, these everyday items can offer a powerful sense of dignity and care.

Rather than focusing solely on period products, our McAuley campaign invites students and families to donate new, unopened toiletry and sanitary items, which will be packaged and sent directly to the Share the Dignity headquarters for assembly into dignity bags.

We are seeking donations of the following items:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Sanitary pads and tampons
  • Deodorant
  • Soap or body wash
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Tissues or wipes
  • Lip balm or small moisturiser

All items must be new and unopened, and donations can be placed in the collection baskets located in McAuley House until the end of Week 3, Term 3.

This is a simple yet powerful way to show compassion in action. Every item donated is a reminder to someone in need that they are seen, supported, and valued. We thank you for helping McAuley House bring dignity and hope to others through this important campaign.

Ignatius House Awareness and Fundraising -  Caring for our Common Home

As is our tradition, Ignatius House recently organised activities to raise awareness in our community about Caring for our Common Home through participation in World Environment Day 2025. This is celebrated globally on June 5th and this year’'s crucial theme, #BeatPlasticPollution, called for a collective and global effort to transition towards a world free of plastic pollution.

Year 7, 8 and 9 students participated in Awareness Raising for World Environment Day during their pastoral care lessons in Week 5 and 6 last Term. These sessions aimed to highlight the pervasive issue of plastic pollution, which impacts every corner of our planet, including our bodies through microplastics. It was shared that an astounding 400 million tonnes of plastic waste are produced each year, with common single-use plastics like water bottles, bags, and cutlery being major contributors to environmental contamination, particularly in our oceans and even in remote locations like Mount Everest and the Mariana Trench.

The World Environment Day 2025 campaign encouraged individuals, organisations, industries, and governments to adopt sustainable practices and drive systemic change. Students reflected on their personal choices and considered how they could contribute to a more sustainable planet. They engaged in activities like brainstorming ways to reduce plastic pollution and then made personal pledges on "footprints", describing how they would “walk gently to #beat plastic pollution” which were displayed around the school. The Ignatius House leaders also prepared a video, which was shown at House Assemblies to promote the theme to the broader school community.

Ignatius House Makes a Difference for Turiscai!

Ignatius House also recently wrapped up its annual Fundraising Initiative, and we're thrilled to share the incredible results of our community's efforts. Continuing our focus on environmental responsibility, we once again highlighted the Return and Earn program we established. We're proud to announce that, thanks to your participation, we kept a remarkable 1355 containers out of landfill!

In addition to our recycling efforts, we also ran successful soft drink sales on Fridays from Week 6 to Week 9. We're excited to report that these sales raised $660. Students were encouraged to place their empty, uncrushed cans in the Return and Earn bins, further boosting our positive environmental impact.

All funds raised went to support our Sister School in Turiscai. With the impressive soft drink sales and the contributions from the Return and Earn program, our total funds raised reached $795! This is a fantastic achievement, and on behalf of Ignatius House and the Ignatius Captains, we extend our sincere gratitude to the entire College community for supporting our initiative, both by purchasing soft drinks and by diligently using the Return and Earn bins.

Ignatius House Liturgy - Hope Ignited: A Reflection on Our St. Ignatius Liturgy

During Community Time in Week 2, our Ignatius House community gathered for a truly inspiring liturgy celebrating the Feast Day of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The atmosphere was charged with reflection and purpose as we embraced the Church's Jubilee Year theme of "Pilgrims of Hope" and St. Ignatius' enduring call to "Go, set the world on fire!"

We were reminded that St. Ignatius' own journey was one of profound transformation, from a soldier seeking earthly glory to a spiritual pilgrim devoted to God's will. His story underscored the idea that each of us carries a unique "spark"—a gift, a passion, a purpose—that is meant to illuminate the world. The readings from Jeremiah and Timothy powerfully echoed this message, emphasising the uncontainable nature of divine inspiration and the courage needed to fan our inner gifts into flames of action, love, and self-discipline.

A highlight of the liturgy was the engaging activity that followed the reflection. Students had the opportunity to personalise "flame cards" with their own commitments—how they will use their sparks to bring hope and light into our school and beyond. Witnessing their thoughtful reflections and seeing their unique contributions added to our communal "Flame of Hope" poster was truly uplifting. We also renewed our house symbols on the PC trees, symbolising our ongoing journey together.

As we continue our year, may the spirit of St. Ignatius and the message of being "pilgrims of hope" who "set the world on fire" with compassion and courage remain with us. We are not just passing through; we are here to make a difference. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to such a meaningful celebration.

Head of Ignatius House

2025 Push-Up Challenge

The Push-Up Challenge is Australia's largest mental health and fitness event, dedicated to raising awareness for mental health. Each year, participants are challenged to complete a set number of push-ups, which represents the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in the most recent year of available data. The challenge aims to:

  • Educate participants with daily mental health facts.
  • Promote mental health awareness.
  • Reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health.
  • Encourage physical activity and connection, which are beneficial for mental well-being.

What an incredible display of strength, resilience, and community spirit! Between June 12 -26, our college community took on the 2025 Push-Up Challenge, and together, we completed a staggering 232,924 push-ups!

Congratulations goes to Campion House, who pushed out an incredible 58,389 push-ups to take the top spot. Not far behind, Ignatius House showed fantastic effort, securing second place with a total of 46,612 push-ups.

Fundraising Fun and Feats of Strength

Beyond the push-ups themselves, we also came together to raise funds and awareness. A huge thank you to our dedicated student ambassador, Patrick Jones, from Year 10 Ignatius. Patrick worked tirelessly to organise a fantastic fundraising day that brought our community together.

The day was a vibrant orange-themed casual clothes day, with students and staff embracing the colour with enthusiasm. At lunchtime, the energy continued with orange food and drink sales, music, and a raffle of Push-Up Challenge merchandise.

One of the highlights of the lunch break was the "How many push-ups can you do in 1 minute?" challenge. We saw some impressive feats of strength, with Kyan Brough emerging victorious after pushing out more than 80 push-ups in just 60 seconds!

The spirit of the orange theme was also celebrated with a "best dressed" competition. Congratulations to our Year 12 students, Mia Bradley, Kai Sauge, Declan Wallace, Ellie Harris, and Ty Calub, who collectively won for their outstanding coordination in orange jumpsuits!

Thanks to everyone's incredible efforts, we successfully raised a total of $1075! These funds went towards Catholic Mission Australia.

Well done, everyone and a huge congratulations to Patrick on a successful event!

Bullying No Way Week

During Week 4, from August 11 to 15, our school will observe Bullying No Way Week. During Pastoral Care classes, students will engage in important discussions focusing on identifying bullying, understanding its impact, and developing effective strategies to respond, both for themselves and others. The curriculum will focus on what constitutes bullying, the motivations behind it, and actionable steps students can take.

Xavier Hosts Bell Shakespeare for English Incursions

Xavier Catholic College was fortunate to be the host to a Pop-Up Theatre presented by Bell Shakespeare this week. On Tuesday, 29 July, our Year 7 and Year 10 students travelled all the way to the Drama Rooms, which were transformed into a mini Globe Theatre for two shows throughout the day.

At the start of the day Year 10 saw the excellent live performance of a show entitled Macbeth; The Rehearsal. This carefully choreographed representation of the infamous Scottish play presented the universal themes of ambition and morality that transcend Shakespreare’s play from 1603 in a manner that resonated with students today. The well-seasoned actors incorporated background information throughout the show in asides that ensured the audience were onboard with the actions of the characters and the intended messages that continue to underpin our society in contemporary times. This directly complemented our current unit of study in English class as we are undergoing a critical study of the play Macbeth. The Year 10 students were a very attentive audience, some were asked to participate and they all loved the show.

After recess, the theatre transformed once again when the Bell Shakespeare troupe performed another play entitled Such Sweet Sorrow for the Year 7 cohort. This show was an introduction to Shakespeare’s works in general that focused on Romeo and Juliet to show how the underlying messages of the plays are delivered through the character’s actions and the audience’s reactions. There was laughter and there were tears as the troupe led us through the emotional experiences of a young couple who showed us the negative effects of long term rivalries and the importance of letting go of our grudges to be our best selves. This feeds into our ongoing study of Shakespeare that serves as a foundation for the importance of literature as social commentary throughout time.

The Bell Shakespeare players were excellent! They also thought we were too - they commented on how attentive our students were and what good actors our Year 10 boys and teachers were as well!

We hope you take forward the importance of the play’s messages to guide you in your studies. The XCC English Faculty

2024 Archibald Prize Touring Exhibition Excursion

Last Friday, 25 July 2025, Year 10 and 11 Visual Arts students visited Lismore Regional Gallery to view the touring exhibition of last year’s Archibald Prize. This was a valuable opportunity for students in regional schools to experience an important exhibition from the Art Gallery of New South Wales of a diverse selection of significant artworks by renowned artists in this prestigious annual Australian art event.

Other work on display included a video art installation, photographs from the Lismore floods, and a local indigenous artist.

Gallery staff commented on how lovely it was to see young people enjoying the gallery, and they also commented on their excellent conduct.

When we returned to school, students participated in painting workshops with their teachers. The knowledge gained from the excursion will form the basis of assessment work. Here are some student comments from an evaluation form about what they gained from the excursion and what they enjoyed:

  • It was nice to see the detail in the artworks up close, and see the brush strokes and the actual size of the portraits visualised
  • The incredible detail of all of the artworks and the talent of all the artists when creating a diverse range of artworks.
  • Seeing all the different types of art styles.
  • I enjoyed seeing all the artworks I've studied in class in real life.
  • Having a day dedicated to art, being with my friends and viewing various forms of art to help in my artmaking
  • I enjoyed learning a bit about each artist and what they used to do their paintings.
  • I enjoyed the video installation, it was extremely captivating and I ended up watching it twice.

New Term, New Books!

In case you didn’t know, we have a constant stream of new books arriving at the XCC library. We display them on the front counter and place them on the ‘New Books’ stand (next to the lounge area) so that titles can easily be identified. Genres can still be identified by the sticker on the spine, and as even more new books arrive, we rotate them into the general population. Our books are sourced from a subscription to Scholastic books who collate young adult novels and send them on. Easy! We are also happy to purchase novels and non fiction titles that are requested (given they are appropriate and will be widely liked).

We love books in the library, but can’t always get through reading everything that arrives, so we also welcome a quick note or chat about something you’ve read, as this helps us to share the love of reading through your recommendations.

NSW Rugby League Country Cup 2025

On Friday, 25 July, Xavier Catholic College proudly participated in the opening round of the NSW Rugby League Country Cup 2025, with our Under 13, Under 15, and Opens Rugby League teams competing at Queen Elizabeth Park in Casino.

In perfect playing conditions, both the Under 13 and Under 15 teams delivered outstanding performances, winning their respective divisions and progressing to the regional finals. Along the way, they secured victories over strong opponents including Evans River, Casino High, St Mary’s, and Trinity College. Our Opens team also showed great skill and determination, narrowly going down in a hard-fought match against Woodlawn College.

On Tuesday, 29 July, the Regional Finals took place at Kingsford Smith Oval in Ballina, once again under fine conditions. Both the Under 13 and 15 teams remained undefeated throughout the day, with each registering one draw, both against Woodlawn College. As a result, progression was determined by points differential (for-and-against).

We are proud to announce that the Xavier Under 15 team has qualified for the NSW Northern Region Finals, which will be held on 20 August in Coffs Harbour. The progression of our Under 13 team remains under review by NSW Rugby League Development Officers.

The commitment, leadership, and skill shown by all students across the tournament were exceptional. Congratulations to every player for their performance and sportsmanship. A heartfelt thank you goes to our dedicated coaches, supportive parents, and the Xavier Catholic College Executive Team for their continued encouragement and support.

Years 7 & 8 Junior Football Gala Day

On Tuesday, 29 June, our Years 7 & 8 boys and girls football team travelled to the Cavanbah Centre in Byron Bay to compete in the Inaugural Junior Football Competition.

Our girls played five 25-minute matches. Finishing at the top of their group, progressing them to the final against Mt. St. Pats (Murwillumbah). It was a tense, hard-fought contest with both teams creating chances. The turning point came when goalkeeper Marly Rando made a brilliant one-on-one save to keep the score level. Soon after, Miliani found the net with a late strike to secure a 1–0 win and crown XCC as the inaugural champions!

An outstanding effort by the girls. Every player stayed positive, worked as a team, and adapted brilliantly to positional changes and substitutions throughout the day. Well done, ladies!

Our Boys team battled hard, showcasing exceptional skill, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the competition, earning a well-deserved third-place finish overall. The day was filled with exciting moments. The team secured two strong wins, including a dominant 6–0 victory that highlighted their attacking flair. They also displayed incredible resilience, earning two hard-fought draws, one of which was against the eventual day champions.

Beyond the results, we are incredibly proud of how all our students represented the school with pride, integrity, and respect. Their conduct on and off the field was exemplary, embodying the values we cherish.

Well done to every player on a memorable and successful Gala Day!

Individual Achievements

Keira McCowan

In April this year, Keira trialled for the Community State cup championship indigenous side and the Northern football NAIDOC Cup squad to be held in October. Keira was selected for both squads.

From 7th July to 11th July this year, Keira attended the Community State championships at Speers Point, Newcastle, where she was named captain of the squad. During the tournament, Keira's team played 6 games, winning 4 games, 1 draw, and 1 loss. As a result, they made it through to the grand final against a very strong rep team from Coffs Harbour, who previously beat them 4 to 0.

The girls had never played together or trained before this tournament, so to make the final was a huge achievement. The final was very tough, and the girls were down 2-0 at halftime. Whatever the coach said at halftime worked; the girls came out strong and full of energy, and as a result, they were awarded a penalty for handball in the box. Keira stepped up as captain and nailed the penalty. With 7 minutes to go, the girls were down 2-1, but a great defensive save led to a quick counterattack, and they scored to even the game. The scores remained 2-2 at the end of regular time. The girls went to a penalty shootout, where Keira once again nailed the 1st shot. After that, we had a few shots stopped and missed, and ended up losing 3 -1 in the penalty shootout.

During the tournament, Keira played every single minute of the seven games and was the top scorer for the team. Massive effort from her and her team. Runners-up in the Community State championships.

Keira will now participate in the Naidoc Cup from the 7th to 9th of October in Sydney and has also been selected for the Newcastle All-Stars Indigenous Football Team to play in Dubbo in October.

Felix Clarke

Congratulations to Felix on her recent selection to represent NSW Phoenix U18 Girls Volleyball at the 2025 Australian Youth Volleyball Championships (AVYC) in Perth, WA. This marks her fourth state selection in volleyball. An outstanding achievement that includes three Indoor and one Beach Volleyball representation.

Felix’s journey to the top began with a rigorous three-week trial process at Netball Central, Olympic Park in Sydney. From there, she advanced through a four-week squad phase, before securing a spot in the final team phase, where 22 athletes are selected to represent NSW Phoenix across two squads, Sky and Navy. After captaining the Navy (development) squad last year, Felix was thrilled to be selected for the top-tier Sky squad for the first time in 2025.

Training commitments are significant, with nine weeks of weekly Saturday training sessions in Sydney throughout Term 3, requiring travel coordination via Jetstar flights and public transport from Ballina or the Gold Coast. Felix often attends additional Friday night sessions as well, demonstrating her dedication to making the most of every training opportunity.

Earlier this year, Felix also proudly represented Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) Volleyball for the second time, adding to her growing list of sporting accolades.

We wish Felix the best of luck as she prepares to take on the nation’s best young volleyballers at the AVYC in September. What an incredible opportunity and reward for her hard work, talent, and perseverance!
