Principal's Message
Dear Parents, Carers, Students, and Friends of the Xavier Catholic College Community,
As we reach the conclusion of Term 3, 2025, I take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support of our College community. Another term has been completed in the academic year, and when we look back over the past ten weeks, we are reminded of just how much happens in the life of our College. We are truly blessed to have such an active and vibrant community.
Throughout this term, our students have achieved great successes in the classroom, on the stage, in the workshops, on the sporting fields and arenas, and through their involvement in the wider community. These achievements are only made possible through the combined efforts of our students, staff, and families, who together bring a wonderful sense of energy and purpose that makes Xavier “buzz” each day and each week of the term.
There are countless opportunities at Xavier, and we continue to encourage our students to participate in all that is available to them. This term’s conclusion is particularly significant as we celebrate the graduation of our Year 12 students – the Class of 2025. We are immensely proud of this fine group of young women and men who leave us as quality young adults with extraordinary talents and abilities. We wish them every blessing as they now face the final hurdle of their HSC examinations, which commence on Thursday, 16 October and conclude on Friday, 7 November. Please keep our Year 12 students, their families, and the dedicated teachers who have supported them in your prayers during this important time.
I also extend my congratulations to our Year 7–11 students, who have embraced our College mantra of “finishing strong.” Full attendance and positive engagement throughout the final week of term have been essential to living out this mantra. A highlight of this has been the opportunity for our younger students to support their graduating peers by attending the Year 12 Graduation celebration on Thursday – a powerful sign of unity and respect within our College.
As we enter the school holiday break, I extend my best wishes to all families for a time of rest and renewal. Please note that I will be on leave during Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 4, returning on Monday, 27 October. In my absence, Mrs Carmel Zuino, our Assistant Principal – Learning and Teaching, will serve as Acting Principal.
Thank you once again for your support and commitment to our College. May the coming weeks provide moments of rest, family connection, and God’s blessings.
As we conclude this term, let us be mindful of St Ignatius’ call to “find God in all things.” In the busyness of life, may we pause to notice God’s presence in our families, friendships, achievements, and even in the quiet moments of rest. We give thanks for the many blessings of this term and entrust our students, especially our graduating Year 12s, to God’s loving care.
New College Principal - 2026
A warm welcome to our new Principal, Michael (Mick) Campbell, who will commence his role in January 2026. Mick joins us from his current role as Principal at St Mary’s College, Casino. Previously, Mick was the Assistant Principal – Learning and Teaching at St John’s College, Woodlawn. Mick lives in the local area and looks forward to leading the College over the coming years. Congratulations, Mick, we look forward to welcoming you throughout Term 4 as you become acquainted with the College.
Congratulations, Year 12!
Congratulations to our exceptionally talented Year 12 students who have recently completed their HSC performances, projects, submissions and orals across a wide range of subjects, including Drama, Music, Visual Arts, Industrial Technology, Textiles & Design, Design & Technology, Languages, and English Extension 2.
Our students have demonstrated outstanding commitment and creativity in producing works of an exceptionally high standard. In many instances, visiting examiners from NESA have remarked on the calibre of their achievements, affirming the excellence of our students’ efforts.
We are especially delighted to share (as @ 25 September) the following achievements:
- 10 student nominations for their Group Performances in Drama for OnSTAGE.
- 5 individual nominations for Drama Solo Performances for OnSTAGE.
- 2 individual nominations for Music Performance for ENCORE.
These nominations are a testament not only to the talent and dedication of our students but also to the tireless support of their families and the expert guidance of our outstanding teachers. We look forward to seeing many of these works celebrated in NESA’s prestigious showcases and displays later in 2025 and into 2026.
We are immensely proud of each of our Year 12 students for their creativity, determination, and excellence.
Thank You - Father's Day Breakfast
Thank you to the fathers and carers of our Year 9 and Year 10 students who were able to attend our Father’s Day Breakfast at Xavier Catholic College. It was a great opportunity to celebrate our ‘Dads’ and for them to share breakfast with their son or daughter.
Celebrating Term 3 Sport
Congratulations to all our sporting teams and their coaches on another outstanding term of participation and achievement. Xavier is a school where multiple opportunities exist to have a go, to contribute and serve, to be part of a team, and to participate, knowing that winning is not everything. Rather, enjoyment, growth, and representation should always be the driving motivations.
I have been very proud of all our participants this term, both as individuals and as members of their teams. Our dedicated coaches consistently speak highly of the spirit shown by our students, who are determined always to give their best and represent the College with pride.
A sincere thank you to all who have contributed to raising the bar in our sporting endeavours this term. In particular, we acknowledge our Leader of Sport, Mr Clint McCarthy, our Sports Assistant, Ms Matisse Anderson, and the many generous coaches who give so much of their time and expertise. Their support ensures that our students continue to thrive, grow in confidence, and find joy in sport.
Term 4 Xavier Parent Community Group
It was great to see an increased number of parents at our Term 3 Parent Group Meeting, where we hosted Chris Hudson as our guest speaker. We all walked away from the meeting with many good pieces of advice from Chris.
We are very pleased to invite all parents, carers, and staff to our Term 4 Xavier Parent Community Group Meeting on Thursday, 13 October from 5.45pm – 7.15 pm at the College. The agenda for the meeting will be finalised early in Term 4 and distributed via Compass. Please note the date and time for this meeting. Come along and have your say, and also hear what the College is planning. You are all very welcome.
Thank you
The Magis Centre has now returned to full use following the completion of seating repairs (damaged following the 2022 flood and evacuation event). Thanks to the DLCS who funded these repairs at a significant cost of close to $150,000.00. Their support is greatly appreciated.

Assistant Principal: Learning & Teaching
Thank You
As another busy and dynamic term comes to a close, I take this opportunity to sincerely thank the staff, students, and families for their valued contributions to our College community. The maxim that it takes a village to raise a child certainly rings true; it is through our combined efforts that our students continue to learn, grow, and thrive.
I would like to acknowledge our team of dedicated and professional staff. This term’s calendar included the Trial HSC Examinations and the Year 11 End-of-Course Examinations. We also issued Semester Reports and Progress Reports for students in Years 7-10, as well as Year 12 End-of-Course Reports. Additionally, Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences were held, and hundreds of parents attended Award Ceremonies, which recognised the consistent effort and academic achievement of our students.
Throughout the term, the College has hosted teams of NESA markers who have been on-site marking HSC projects and practical tasks. We have run HSC language examinations and HSC Showcase evenings for Music, English Extension II, and Drama. We have created numerous opportunities for families to visit the College and for the wider school community to witness the amazing talents of our students. Teachers across all year levels have organised numerous incursions and excursions across Key Learning Areas to ensure students have real-world connections to their learning, to nurture curiosity and inspire wonder.
Beyond the classroom, teachers have engaged in ongoing professional development, as required within the performance and development framework. Staff are engaged in implementing the NSW curriculum reform, which has necessitated an enormous amount of preparation in addition to their usual duties. I sincerely thank our teachers, LOLs, and support staff for their hard work, their commitment to our students, and the pursuit of excellence.
Year 12 Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony
The Year 12 Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, 25 September, and we were delighted to welcome families and special guests to acknowledge and celebrate the graduating class of 2025. I congratulate Year 12 on their effort and achievements. We hope they transition to the world beyond school with a strong sense of the Ignatian spirit - as young men and women for others. Go, set the world alight!
Year 7-10 Reflection on Learning and Goal Setting
Last week, students in Years 7-10 received Progress Reports, which provided feedback on learning behaviours in specific courses. We hope this report catalyses a conversation with your child, not just about what they know, but how they learn.
We invited parents to sit with their child/ren to complete a Reflection and Goal Setting activity, working through three simple steps:
- Respond to a series of questions that guide students to reflect on and evaluate their learning behaviours
- Set a learning goal for the term ahead to encourage students to be accountable for improving their learning in partnership with parents and teachers.
- Identify three actions to empower each individual to achieve their learning goal in Term 4.
Successful learning requires individuals who know how to use feedback, reflect, and self-evaluate to establish personal learning goals. I encourage parents who have not already done so to discuss their child's learning at school with them, as well as practical steps that will empower them to continue improving. For further information, please refer to communication via Compass.
Subject Selections
Students in Years 8 and 10 have recently been informed of their study pattern for 2026. There is some capacity to request changes, and students will be advised of the process in the first week of the next term. Any changes are subject to availability.
Year 11
Congratulations to Year 11 on the completion of their end-of-course examinations and their preliminary studies. When students return in Term 4, they will begin their Higher School Certificate (HSC), the culmination of their educational journey. Their teachers stand ready to accompany them on the challenging and exciting journey that lies ahead, and students will be provided with detailed information about HSC course requirements. This is a continuation of the College’s ongoing efforts to provide academic care through the provision of regular and timely information to assist them in navigating the complexity of the HSC. Parents will also be invited to a HSC Information Evening early next term.
At this critical juncture, students have the opportunity to adjust their study pattern, as the minimum requirement changes from twelve to ten units. During the first-year level meeting in Week 1 of next term, information regarding dropping and/or changing courses will be presented to students, and subject changes will be processed at the beginning of Term 4. Please be advised that strict NESA rules are in place throughout the HSC, governing many aspects of learning, teaching, and assessment. The Term 4 Assessment Calendar is now live on Compass, and the HSC Assessment Policy (2025/26) will be published in Week 1, Term 4. If you have further questions or concerns, please contact Mrs Emma Smith, Leader of Curriculum, or me.
End-of-Course Reports will be issued in Week 2, Term 4, with the opportunity for Parent Teacher Conferences to follow.
HSC Examinations
The HSC examination period commences on Thursday, 16 October and concludes on Friday, 7 November 2025, under the supervision of Karen Stanton, NESA’s HSC Presiding Officer. Students have been thoroughly briefed on examination procedures and reminded that they are responsible for knowing their individual examination timetable, which is available on Students Online.
We wish our students all the best with their HSC preparation and encourage them to engage in a consistent and thorough revision of their coursework. Teachers will host holiday workshops, and a separate timetable has been emailed to students. It is a very long road, but they are nearly there, and these final efforts really can make a difference.
We understand that the HSC can be a stressful experience for students and their families. Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Emma Smith (Leader of Curriculum) or me if you have any questions or concerns. We are happy to assist and will do our best to support every student through the examination period.

Best Wishes To Our Year 12s
Thank you to the entire Xavier Catholic College community, and especially our Heads of House, for helping make the final week of Year 12 a memorable and joy-filled conclusion to their time at the College. The week was filled with wonderful House activities that highlighted the strong bonds within our community.
For me, this graduating class holds a special place in my heart. They are the first cohort I have journeyed alongside from the very beginning, welcoming them as bright-eyed Year 7 students when I joined the College in 2020, and now farewelling them as the fine young people they have become. It has been a privilege to witness their growth, their resilience, and the many ways they have contributed to the life of our College.
As their formal schooling comes to an end, we give thanks for these young people and the unique gifts they have shared with our community. We pray that God will accompany them in the adventures ahead and guide their paths toward lives of meaning, service, and joy.
Congratulations and best wishes to the Xavier Catholic College Year 12 Graduating Class of 2025!
Faber House Mass and Timor Immersion Blessing
On Saturday night, our community gathered at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church for the final House Mass of the year, celebrating Faber House. Coming together in Eucharist is central to our mission at Xavier Catholic College, and this Mass was a beautiful expression of faith, unity, and community.
Faber student leaders played an active role in the liturgy as readers and ministers, bringing a strong sense of pride and connection to the celebration.
A highlight of the evening was the blessing of our 2025 Timor Immersion Team. This moment marked the final step in their preparation before travelling to Timor in the second week of the holidays. Their presentation to the community during the Mass was both inspiring and faith-filled, reflecting their commitment to serve and learn through this important experience.
We are grateful to the many students, families, and staff who joined us on the evening, and to the parish for their warm welcome and support. It was a fitting conclusion to our House Masses for 2025, strengthening the bonds between our College and parish communities.
Fundraising for Timor and Sophie
Our community has once again shown wonderful generosity in supporting our Sister School in Timor-Leste.
The Giant Timor Raffle raised an impressive $824.40. We are deeply grateful to the local businesses who kindly donated prizes, including Coffee & Kitchen, Lennox Pizza, Palace Cinema, The Balcony Bar & Oyster Co. Byron Bay, Brookfarm, North Coast Medispa, and Yoflo Byron Bay. Thank you also to our families and community for purchasing tickets and showing such strong support.
In addition, a group of Year 11 students and friends of Sophie organised a Bake Sale, raising a remarkable $1,419.00 towards Sophie's GoFundMe page. Many of these students are stepping into leadership roles for the 2026 school year, and their initiative and commitment was wonderful to witness.
Thank you to our students for truly embodying the Ignatian call to be “men and women for and with others.”

Staff Spirituality Day
As we reach the end of another busy term, we thank our families and students for their understanding in supporting staff to gather for our annual Staff Spirituality Day at the Ballina Surf Club. This day is not about starting the holidays early, but about setting aside time for renewal, reflection, and formation. An essential part of our work as Catholic educators.
This year, Bishop Gregory will continue guiding us through his Spirituality Models, which have focused on Work, Rest, and Pray. In 2023, we reflected on Work; in 2024, on Rest; and now in 2025, our focus turns to Prayer.
The day will invite us to pause from the busyness of daily routines, to reflect more deeply on our relationship with God, ourselves, and others, and to be reminded that God is not only with us, but within us, sustaining our very being.
We look forward to this meaningful conclusion to the term, one that strengthens our faith and equips us to continue serving our students and community with generosity and hope.
As the term concludes, I wish all families a safe and restful holiday break. May this time be filled with renewal, joy, and peace. God bless.

Faber House Market & R U OK Day
Each year, Faber House hosts a market to raise money for the local homeless community through St Vincent de Paul in Ballina. In the lead-up to the event, we encourage students and families to donate clothing that would otherwise go directly to Vinnies. These items are sold during lunchtime, with all proceeds going to support those facing hardship. Alongside the clothing sale, we also host a sausage sizzle and offer soft drinks for sale to boost our fundraising efforts.
This year marked our third market, and it was a tremendous success. Students and staff alike enjoyed the lively atmosphere, browsing through bargains and supporting a worthy cause. Thanks to the hard work of Faber volunteers, we were able to set up, manage sales, and pack up seamlessly around the lunch break.
Thank you to everyone for their generous donations and to our outstanding student and staff volunteers; we raised an impressive $1,291.92 in just one break! All leftover clothing was donated to St Vincent de Paul the following day.
Big shout-outs to:
- Our House Captains, Lillielle, Noah, Harry and Izzy - who kept the RUOK Day activities pumping, creating space for connection and fun.
- Kayla, Riley, Zara, Daniel, Zane, Luca and Brayden - absolute legends on the checkouts, keeping the Market flowing and making it all look easy.
The day was a true example of Faber spirit. Students stepping up, supporting one another, and proving that when we work together, we can achieve something truly amazing.

College News
Maths News
As we move towards the end of term, we want to share some insights into how we are helping your child develop a deep and lasting understanding of Mathematics, and how you can support this journey at home.
Our department's teaching philosophy is influenced by the work of leading mathematics educator, Craig Barton. A core idea from Barton's research is that learning is most effective when students move beyond simply memorising a method to understanding why that method works. Productive struggle and making mistakes are not signs of failure, but essential parts of the learning process.
How can you encourage this at home?
When your child is working on a maths problem, try shifting the conversation from "Did you get the right answer?" to "How did you approach that problem?" or "Can you explain your thinking to me?". Encouraging your child to articulate their reasoning, even if they make a mistake, helps them build stronger connections and confidence. Framing errors as opportunities for discovery rather than as setbacks is one of the most powerful ways you can support their mathematical mindset.
A Reminder on Maths Homework
A common belief is that once the assigned homework questions are completed, the work for the night is done. However, in Mathematics, there is always something to do. Consistent, spaced-out practice is far more effective than cramming before a test. If your child finishes their set work, we encourage them to:
- Review and summarise the notes from that day's lesson.
- Attempt a few practice questions from a topic covered last week.
- Create flashcards for key formulas or vocabulary.
- Identify a concept they found tricky and find a tutorial video online to gain a different perspective.
- Engaging with our online platform subscriptions at home (Education Perfect and IXL).
New Maths Support Sessions in Term 4
To further support our students, we are excited to announce a change to our extra support program.
Starting in Week 1, Term 4, our Maths study and support sessions will move to Friday mornings from 8:00 am to 8:45 am in the School Library.
We are also thrilled to launch a new Peer-to-Peer Tutoring program during these sessions. Several of our high-achieving Senior Students will be available to provide guidance, share their strategies, and assist younger students in a supportive and collaborative environment. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to receive targeted help before the school day begins.
We look forward to a productive and successful final term in Mathematics.
Sincerely,
Mr Fox

Write A Book In A Day
You did what?
On Tuesday, 16th September, the library, in conjunction with the English faculty, hosted the annual Write A Book In A Day competition, which assists with childhood cancer research projects. Starting at 8 am and (hopefully) finishing at 8pm, teams of 5 to 10 students are tasked with creating a 5000-word chapter book, complete with illustrations.
The excitement and creative thinking began with the release of the unseen parameters that must be included: five words (novel, gooey, yarn, plunge and homework), two primary characters, a non-human character, a setting and an issue. Some excellent organisational and teamwork skills were showcased as teams divided up roles and got to work.
As the day continued into the night, fatigue started to set in, somewhat allayed by snacks and a pizza dinner. After some quick edits to fit the word limit, all teams managed to submit a final book, with Ms Lincoln and Ms Leigh-Jones hitting the final upload button in the nick of time.
Submitted books will be made available to kids in hospitals around Australia to enjoy, with funds raised going towards helping kids get out of hospital and back in the classroom sooner.

Hospitality Sydney Exursion
Our Year 12 Hospitality students recently traded the classroom for a three-day, hands-on Sydney tour, and it was a smash hit! This wasn't just a trip; it was an immersion into the real world of five-star service and diverse dining experiences.
The students were given exclusive behind-the-scenes access to some of Sydney’s most iconic venues. They didn't just observe. They got to create! Highlights included crafting their own lunch and beverages in the commercial kitchen at The Potts Point Hotel and a fascinating tour Icebergs Bondi, complete with a delicious lunch.
The tour was a culinary adventure, too. Students explored a range of dining styles, from the unique Japanese BBQ at Gyuniku to breakfast at the beautiful The Grounds City. They even learned the secrets of mixing the perfect drink with a mocktail training course.
To cap off the experience, the group got an exclusive look at the luxury side of the industry with tours of The Apprentice and The Sheraton Hotel. The students walked away with invaluable industry knowledge and a serious appreciation for the world-class hospitality that Sydney has to offer. They didn't just see the industry, they became a part of it.
Thank you to all our hospitality students for their excellent attitude and involvement in the experience, and to Ms Loch & Mr Pavez for organising and supervising the trip.

Year 9 and 10 Child Studies
Year 10
This term, Year 10 Child Studies performed a song written by two students, Eva White and Tayah Jung, as part of their Children and Culture assessment task. The performance was recorded in our school's Yarning Circle, providing a fitting setting for this piece.
The song, designed for Harmony Early Learning Centre, was based on the centre’s Acknowledgement of Country and reflects the students’ thoughtful engagement with the course content. The task required significant collaboration, creativity, and commitment, and the class is to be commended for the inclusive and respectful manner in which they approached the project.
I am very proud of the way the students worked together to produce this outcome, demonstrating both their understanding of cultural respect and their ability to apply course concepts in a meaningful and practical way.
Year 9
This term, our Year 9 Child Studies classes had the wonderful opportunity to visit Fox Street Preschool and engage in a program of interaction and learning with the children. Over several weeks, students participated in play-based activities, storytelling, and group games, building meaningful connections with the preschoolers while also developing their own understanding of child development and care.
The experience proved to be both rewarding and insightful, allowing students to put their classroom learning into practice in a real-world setting. They were able to observe how young children grow and learn, while also gaining valuable skills in communication, patience, and responsibility.
We are grateful to Fox Street Preschool for welcoming our students so warmly and providing such a supportive environment. Experiences like this highlight the real benefits of Child Studies, giving our students a chance to engage with the community and deepen their knowledge of children and their needs.

Year 9 Child Studies students have been learning about the responsibilities of caring for a newborn. As part of their hands-on learning, students visited a local park to experience the practical challenges of taking a newborn on an outing. They also recently completed an assessment that required them to foster a “baby egg”, simulating the daily care and attention a newborn needs. In addition, students designed and constructed model nurseries that provide warmth, safety, and storage for a baby. It was wonderful to see the level of care, creativity, and dedication shown in each of their projects.

Design and Technology Major Projects
Design and Technology students have been working all year on their major projects. The results demonstrate a high level of success. These projects are marked by external HSC markers and account for 60% of the students' overall mark. The students are required to develop an innovative project idea that is supported by a 40-page (A3) folio, which documents their design process.
Congratulations to the students and thank you to Ms Peachey and Mr Dooley, their class teachers.
Below is a short summary of the projects.
- Jackson Coates - Alternative Metal Working Fuel System. My Major Design Project focuses on developing an on-demand oxyhydrogen (HHO) generator as a safer, cleaner, and more cost-effective alternative to traditional fuel gases like acetylene and propane.
- Lillielle Hudson - Space Saving Storage System. My project was a wardrobe that folds out of a shower. This project was based on the issue of limited storage/living space when travelling in vehicles.
- Jett Kubelka - Interchangeable Modular Snowboarding Plate. My Major Project is the design and creation of a modular snowboard with interchangeable parts. The goal is to reduce the costs of snowboarding and the need for multiple boards by creating a single board that can be adapted for all stiffness requirements.
- Ruby Roach - The Second Stitch Tote. This project is a direct response to that research. I have designed and created a bag and a system that not only helps reduce textile waste but also serves as an educational tool.
- Jonah Taylor- Innovative Side Table. This project is a rustic industrial bedside table designed to combine practicality with style. Constructed from multi-use pine and corrugated tin, the table features hidden storage, a removable shelf for flexible organisation, and a fold-out lid that doubles as extra table space.
- Josh Thomas - Guardian Spearfishing First Aid Float. The Guardian Float is an innovative safety floatation device designed to support spearfishers and divers in unpredictable marine environments.
- Leelu Welsby - ‘awear’ Reusable Sunscreen Bottle. A reusable sunscreen bottle that detects UV-radiation intensity. It encourages sunscreen reapplication through rays that indicate UV levels.

HSC Major Textiles Projects
The Year 12 Textiles and Design class have successfully completed their major projects that have already been externally marked. This comprises 50% of their final mark and includes a 12-page folio that supports the design and creation of their textile piece. The projects are a culmination of 12 months of work in design, practical and communication skills.
- Lara Endres- a vintage-inspired apron and oven mitt set that reflects the charm and practicality of 1950s domestic housewives. The focus was on vintage chintz fabrics, which featured hand-embroidered flowers and machine-decorative stitching.
- Marlia Griffiths- a Barbie-inspired 3-piece costume comprising a bodice, tailored shorts and a pleated skirt. It was inspired by both the recent Barbie (2023) film and iconic looks from the 20th century. It included digital machine embroidery, sublimation printing, and laser-cut appliqué designs.
- Anya Piilcher- a textile art wall-hanging that takes inspiration from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. It featured a series of decorative techniques, including fabric dyeing, hand painting, sublimation printing, hand embroidery, and laser-cut appliqué.
- Ruby Roach- a petal costume corseted dress design inspired by flowers and traditional ballet tutus. The design incorporated laser-cut 3D flowers, lace appliqué, sublimation printing, and a multi-layered tulle and organza skirt.
- Pippa Bailey- a 1940s-inspired bikini, which is a wearable textile art piece, influenced by the global issue of coral bleaching. The design utilised an array of embellishment techniques, including salt dyeing, 3D ribbon appliqué, beading, hand embroidery and sublimation printing.
- Neeve Alexander- a 2-piece fairy costume inspired by fairy gardens and fairy-core silhouettes. It featured an organza and satin bodice with laser-cut 3D flowers, ribbon appliqué, DMC thread cords, and beading, as well as a two-layered satin and lace skirt with embellishments that continued from the bodice.
- Sarsha Djokic - a traditional Serbian Jelek (bodice) that has been reinvented with innovative decorative techniques, including digital machine embroidery, decorative machine stitching, and laser cutting. It was made in a black and gold colour scheme with an eyelet lace-up front.
- Tawny Azar-Thomson - a 2-piece circus-inspired costume, featuring an embroidered velvet vest with a sublimation-printed lining and lace-up panelled shorts. The design draws on elements from vintage big-top circus performances and acrobatic attire.

Year 12 Multimedia
Charlie Kennedy, Australia, 2035 - In a world consumed by overpopulation and relentless urban development, natural landscapes have vanished beneath an endless array of cities. The air is heavy with smog, and the sound of machinery drowns out any memory of birdsong or waves. The only glimpse of the Earth’s once-vibrant beauty remains in virtual reality, where people escape into simulations of forests, oceans, and skies. This digital refuge becomes the last link to a forgotten world, both comforting and tragic. Humanity depends on technology to relieve what it destroyed.
Gisele Blunden, CALME - In the relentless rush of the city, where noise and motion never cease, there is an undeniable need to step away and rediscover inner peace. Calme is a short film that embodies this journey, contrasting the restless pulse of urban life with the serene stillness of the ocean. Filmed across various locations, from the bustling streets of Brisbane and Sydney to the tranquil shores of Byron Bay and Lennox Head, as well as the Philippines, the film highlights the profound shift that occurs when we leave behind chaos and embrace nature. Through dynamic editing, motion graphics, 3D animation, and a carefully designed soundscape, the narrative flows from the clamour of traffic to the soothing rhythm of waves. With footage captured on drones, GoPros, and traditional cameras, Calme portrays both the intensity of the city and the calming embrace of the sea. At its heart, the film is an invitation to pause, breathe, and rediscover the clarity that comes from reconnecting with the natural world. Calme aimed to inspire audiences to step back from life’s pressures and how reconnecting with nature provides a source of clarity.
Liz Lurchi - For my major project, “Art in Everyday Life,” I created a 3-minute 55-second video exploring the philosophical connection between life and art, illustrating how art shapes and reflects human experience. The video combines 2D animation and stop-motion techniques, including a sequence created with cut-out paper, and live-action footage to visually represent life as an ongoing creative process. Using software like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, I developed a thoughtful and immersive narrative that engages a broad audience. Despite challenges with time management and technical constraints, the project successfully communicates a meaningful and intellectually stimulating exploration of the interplay between art and life.
Charlie McDonald - My Year 12 Multimedia project, In Search of Serenity, is a short film that explores themes of peace and reflection. By capturing natural landscapes, including both land and ocean scenes, I aimed to show balance and tranquillity. To build the atmosphere, I worked with colour grading, experimented with different camera angles, and used drone footage to create a wider perspective. The film combines these visuals with carefully chosen sound design to give the audience an immersive experience. Overall, it represents my attempt to find stillness and calm within the busyness of everyday life.
Molly Tymmons - My project ‘connection to country’ is a film I created based on Aboriginal culture and connection to country and the land. My video shows culture and the importance of the land and country to Aboriginal Australians.

Year 9 Textiles Technology
The second project in Textiles Technology this year has been the Japanese Kimono, utilising the Indigo Dyeing technique on 100% silk fabric. Students created several shibori dye experiments to determine the most effective techniques for their individual project pieces. Students also used sublimation printing on the Obi (belt) and lapel lining to add a CAD Japanese motif to the design. The overall effect is stunning. The Kimonos have been on display in the Window of C block alongside the design portfolios that feature design sketches, fabric swatches and technique samples. Their teacher, Mrs Lampe, was very impressed with the level of the project work.

A Taste of France at Xavier Catholic College
Last Saturday, the aromas of France filled the air at Xavier Catholic College! We were delighted to host a French Cooking Class in collaboration with the Alliance Française Côte Du Nord.
Sixteen aspiring chefs joined Hospitality teacher, Mrs. Lampe, to create a magnificent three-course French feast. The menu was a true culinary journey, featuring:
- Pissaladière: A classic tart from Nice with a flaky pastry crust topped with sweet caramelized onions, anchovies, and olives.
- Porc a la normande: Tender pork braised in cider with grilled apple and served alongside roasted chat potatoes.
- Crème Caramel: A smooth, creamy custard dessert finished with a dramatic blow torch flourish for that perfect brûléed sugar top.
The participants, all members of the Alliance Française, embraced the experience with gusto, filling our kitchen with the lively chatter of French conversations about techniques, ingredients, and, of course, the delicious results. They were incredibly grateful for the use of our state-of-the-art hospitality kitchen and dining facilities. It was a wonderful day of community, culture, and cuisine!

Years 7 & 8 NRCC Volleyball
A massive congratulations to the Year 7 and 8 Girls Volleyball team on their outstanding performance at the recent NRCC Volleyball competition. The team played with incredible skill and determination, ultimately finishing as overall Runners-up on the day!
Congratulations to the team - Alma Pauhgreen (Captain), Charlize Carrier, Charlotte Doyle, Maggie Doyle, Coco Furrmann, Emma Patterson, Milliana Tighe and Luka Spyker. A special shout-out must go to our team captain, Alma, for her exceptional leadership throughout the tournament.
The team's strong performance was a result of several impressive wins:
- Game 1: A confident win against Mount St Pats, 18-13.
- Game 2: A dominant victory over McCauley Catholic College, Grafton, 10-3.
- Game 3: A decisive win against St Mary's Casino, 20-13.
- Final Game: A powerful finish, winning 23-11 against Trinity.
The team also showcased their fighting spirit in two nail-biting games, narrowly losing by just one point to St Joseph's Banora (13-14) and St John's Woodlawn (16-17). Their grit in these close matches was inspiring to watch.
Finally, a huge congratulations to Remmie Campbell and Coco Furrmann, who were jointly awarded the Players' Player award by their teammates. This award is a testament to their dedication, skill and positive attitude on the court.

Rugby 10s Gala Day
On Thursday, 4 September, three of our Boys' rugby teams competed at the Far North Coast Rugby 10s Gala Day. The day started with a thumping win by our Under 16s Boys, setting the stage for a thoroughly dominant day for the College teams. In their second game, the 16s again demonstrated their strength, willpower and teamwork with another win over their opposition.
Next up, the Open Boys continued a history of Xavier successes, winning all three of their games in dominant fashion and shutting down efforts from Ballina Coast High School, Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar College and a rematch in the final with Xavier’s Opens coming out the overall champions.
Despite a long wait through the morning, the Xavier Under 14s Boys continued the trend, piling points on both of their opposition teams and running out pool winners for their age group. Frustratingly, the 14s final match was cancelled due to scheduling challenges, but they left the day undefeated.
Unfortunately, the 16s fell short in the final hurdle against Ballina Coast High School, though they still put in an excellent effort in the final match.
Player highlights;
- Open Boys Jett Flatley executing a perfect 50-22 kick and an in-field bomb that landed squarely in the opposition's goal, both leading to Xavier scores.
- 16s Boys: A rampaging Kirk Fox hammered the opposition with over 15 tackles made in the day.
- 14s Boys: Rabbie Downie ended the day on five tries scored across two games, carving through the opposition like a hot knife through butter.

NSW Schools Netball Cup
On Wednesday, 3 September, our Year 7/8 girls' netball team had a fantastic run at the NSW Schools Cup, showing great teamwork, determination, and skill.
The girls played a total of five games, with two solid wins, demonstrating excellent shooting from Ella Rule, Allanah McCarthy, Evie Clarke and Cahlu Bond-Sheenan and solid mid-court passing from Ellarose Jukes and Audrey Jack. A close and competitive match against St Mary's Casino ended in a well-earned draw with strong defence by Remie Campbell, Indiana Buchan, Asha Kincade and Hannah Prior. Despite a narrow loss in one of the pool games, the team’s overall performance was enough to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
In the semi-final, the girls faced a formidable opponent, Trinity College, and despite giving it their all, were defeated. While the loss was disappointing, the team should be extremely proud of their efforts and progress in the tournament.
Well done to all players involved. An impressive effort and sensational teamwork by all players.
Coach - Mrs Ciel Jukes

They showed remarkable resilience and teamwork on the court, walking away with a fantastic four wins out of their six games.
A huge congratulations to the team on a well-deserved result!

Country Cup - Coffs Harbour
On Wednesday, 10 September, the Xavier College U/15 Rugby League team competed in the Country Cup Final in Coffs Harbour, after previously winning both zone & regional tournaments. Big thanks to the coach, Mr Colman, for his professionalism in preparation. Looking forward to seeing this team development in the coming years.
